The Conversation Radio Interview 7th March 2018

 In Interview, Videos

With popular long-running shows like Sarah’s, there is a long waiting list for guests. Sarah invited me on her Channel Radio show way back in December last year and I was guest 76. Her show has a format where she asks a number of well-chosen questions to the guest. The shows are not scripted and consequently stay fresh as a result. The guests don’t know what they are going to be asked in advance: it’s a complete surprise as you will hear! They are also asked for 1-2 songs to play during the show. I chose ‘Homeward Bound’ by Simon & Garfunkel. I also chose Gerry Rafferty’s ‘Baker Street’ but it didn’t make it into the final show.

This was a radio show, but I managed to film my side of the studio throughout so you can see my actions and reactions all along. I’ve added the broadcast sound track to the video. To help you locate the parts of the interview that interest you I have divided the video into several parts. Of course you’re welcome to watch/listen to the whole 60 minutes, but I know we all have busy lives.

Sarah-Anne Lucas (Bird on a Bike) makes the final checks for her show 'The Conversation"

Part 1: The show begins with Sarah’s introductions about the show and herself. It moves on to a discussion about the highs and lows of running long distances from 10kms to 10-miles to marathons and iron-man competitions.

Part 2: This is Part 2 of The Conversation from Sarah-Anne Lucas on Channel Radio. Mark relates how he came to give an interview to Australian broadcaster SBS… in Arabic… having hardly spoken the language in 5 years.

Part 3: This is Part 3 of The Conversation from Sarah-Anne Lucas on Channel Radio. In this part, Mark explains how he originally began to study Arabic and what it has led to through his life. This part concludes with a discussion of meditation and mindfulness.

Part 4: This is Part 4 of The Conversation from Sarah-Anne Lucas on Channel Radio. In this part, Mark explains his philosophy for communications, namely that businesses (and individuals) benefit from improving their organisation and long-term planning for communications.

Part 5: This is Part 5 of The Conversation from Sarah-Anne Lucas on Channel Radio. Mark relates why his chosen song is ‘Homeward Bound’ by Simon and Garfunkel.

Part 6: This is Part 6 of The Conversation from Sarah-Anne Lucas on Channel Radio. Here Mark answers her question, “What had to end for something else to begin?” and Mark talks about his experience of moving frequently as opposed to being static and creating/doing.

Part 7: This is Part 7 of The Conversation from Sarah-Anne Lucas on Channel Radio. Here Sarah asks a series of five surprising questions each starting with ‘What’, that cause Mark to search deep in his responses.

Part 8: This is Part 8 of The Conversation from Sarah-Anne Lucas on Channel Radio. Here Sarah asks, “What faith do you hold that others cannot see?” that leads Mark to tell his views on the distinctions between religion, faith and spirituality, and surviving cancer.

Part 9: This is Part 9 of The Conversation from Sarah-Anne Lucas on Channel Radio. She asks Mark, “What bothers you?”, which leads him to mention the lack of consequences for politicians who cause disasters. Mark also talks about TE Lawrence.

Part 10: This is Part 10 – the final part – of The Conversation from Sarah-Anne Lucas on Channel Radio. She asks Mark for his contact details and Mark adds to wise sayings for the listeners: one well-known and the other (probably) coined by Mark himself.
